Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist Review

After renting and watching Juno, Rob and I went to the theater to see Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. The common denominator in these movies is Michael Cera. This is the third movie I’ve seen of Michael Cera (Superbad and Juno) and its the third time I’ve seen Cera play basically the same role. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, because it comes across as very real. It just sometimes feels like you are seeing the same character in three different movies.

As my mom said to me, this is a “coming of age” type movie revolving around Nick (Cera) dealing with being heart broken after his girlfriend, Tris (Alexis Dziena), breaks up with him. His gay band mates, in the band “The Jerk Offs”, try to pull him out of his depression and get him to play at their gig. They end up getting him out of the house by telling him that it is rumored that “Where’s Fluffy?” (indie band who doesn’t publicize concerts) was going to play a secret show in the city.

This is where Hollywood wants you to ignore the facts. Most of the rest of the movie is made up of these High Schoolers spend literally all night driving around New York City drinking in clubs, chasing bands and popping up in nude gay reviews all without even being questioned about their age. But that is a minor detail that just bugged me a little.

After Nick’s band plays on stage he is standing on the bar and is approached by Norah (Kat Dennings) who kisses him rather suddenly to cover for a lie she told a friend of hers. Unfortunately for both, the friend happens to be Nick’s ex Tris. This sets off a night of adventure trying to find “Where’s Fluffy?” and Norah’s drunk friend, Caroline (Ari Graynor). During the night Nick and Norah are pushed together by the gay band mates and seem to have near misses at getting together throughout the night.

Many laughs come from seeing Caroline being sick around town. While in the bus station she pukes, answers the phone, drops phone into toilet, digs it out then digs her gum back out. Later Norah takes this same piece of gum and chews it to the end of the movie. Later in the movie we find out that Norah is able to walk into any club without waiting is because her dad now owns “Electric Lady Studios.” Yes, the one Jimmy Hendrix made famous. A great scene takes place in the studio when Nick and Norah finally express their feelings for one another.

This is a great date movie, I kinda wish I was there on a date. Sorry Rob! It will keep you laughing but also continues a touching love story.

I give this movie 4 out of 5 stars! Go see it! There is NO WAY that this movie should have come in behind “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” last week!!
